The Flag Code of India 2002, the rules for Indian Flag

• • Significance of Colours (Tricolor) :
    • SAFFRON: Denotes renunciation of disinterestedness
    • WHITE: Path of truth to guide our conduct
    • GREEN: Shows relation to soil and plants
  • Material of National Flag: National flag should be made of spun and hand woven wool \ cotton \ silk khadi fabric
  • Size of National Flag: National Flag should be rectangular in shape with ratio 3:2. There are a total of nine different sizes in mm.

  • Dignity and Honour of Flag:
    1. National flag should be distinctly placed
    2. A damaged flag should not be displayed
    3. When displayed on speaker’s platform, it should be flown on the right side of the speaker
    4. When displayed on wall, the saffron band should be upper most
    5. No flag should be placed higher or side by side with the national flag
    6. Flag made of paper can be waved by public during functions, but such flags should not be thrown on grown after event
    7. Flag displayed in open should be flown from sunrise to sunset, irrespective of weather conditions
    8. Damaged flag should be destroyed in private, preferably by burning
  • Correct Display:
    1. Flag should occupy the position of honour and be distinctly placed
    2. When used on occasions like unveiling of a statue, the flag should be displayed distinctly and separately
    3. Where there is a practice to fly flag on any public building, it should be flown on all days, including Sundays and holidays.
    4. Flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered slowly
    5. When displayed on a motor car, it should be affixed either on the middle front of the bonnet or to the front right side of the car
    6. When the flag is carried in a procession, it should be on the right. If there is a line of other flags, national flag should be in front of the centre
  • Incorrect Display:
    1. 1. Flag should not be dipped in salute of any person or thing.
       2. Flag should not be allowed to touch ground
       3. Flag should not be displayed in a manner which may damage it.
  • Misuse:
    1. 1. Flag should not be used as drapery in any form except in case of state\military\central paramilitary forces funerals
       2. Flag should not be flown at half-mast except when instructions are issued by the government
       3. Cannot be used as a portion of costume or uniform
       4. Cannot be used for carrying anything
       5. Cannot be used to cover a speaker’s desk
       6. Lettering of any kind is not allowed on flag
       7. Flag should not be intentionally displayed with saffron down
       8. Flag should not be draped on top side or back of a vehicle
       9. Flag should not be used as a covering for a building
       10. Flag should not be used for decoration
       11. Flag cannot be used for commercial purposes
  • Punishment for Insult: Anyone found guilty of dishonouring the national flag is liable to be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extended to three years.
